SICK AS A DOG

I don't know where the phrase 'Sick as a dog' came from, but it is the only phrase out there that people tend to use when they're really sick so I'm using it. Actually, if anyone out there know the origin, tell me and I'll (not) give you a prize.

Anyhow, I am still sick as a dog. I smell like absolute shit, can't stay awake for more than 30 minutes at a time, and have this irrational fear that I will never get better. I have already missed 3 days of work. I am watching Lord of the Rings, all of them. Sounds nerdy, but when you sleep through most of all three films it is a more dillute nerdiness. Goddamn those Orcs are scary.

REVIEW! MY MORNING JACKET - WEBSTER HALL - 10/18/05

I am sick. Real sick. Sore throat, sinus pressure, nausea, dissiness, watery snot dripping from my nose, aching all over.... the works. I was invited to see My Morning Jacket last night at Webster Hall and even though I felt near death went to the show. I was given VIP pass and headed straight to the VIP seating area where I plopped my sick ass in a chair next to the railing and camped out there for the evening.

Much like the New Pornographers, I had never heard My Morning Jacket prior to seeing them. The show sold out so fast and there is such a buzz surrounding the band that I had high expectations. The opener, Kathleen Edwards, played soft, melodic, and very impressive tunes. Her rhythm section was absolutely tops and I found her lead guitarist to be one of the tastier guitarists I have seen in a while. They were great but her tunes were a bit mellow and made me drowsy and I began to fear that I'd be in for an entire evening of slow tunes.

My Morning Jacket came on and totally ripped the place up. Their tunes were anthemic and their energy was unparalleled. I sat on my little chair absolutely transfixed. The VIP area was totally swamped with frat boys and these really over-perfumed women and this negative element normally would have had an effect on the entire show, but MMJ was so powerful and so loud that the stage was the sole focus of my attention. I took some of my usual mediocre pics. Enjoy jerks!

REVIEW! OBITUARY & NAPALM DEATH - BB KINGS - 9/6/05

Last month my metal-head dreams came true when the Obituary / Napalm Death tour came to NYC. How a place like BB Kings became the NYC death metal venue, I'll never know. Anyhow, approaching the venue, I saw Barney from Naplm Death standing outside and like a nervous fan boy asked if he'd mind having his picture taken with me. He was more than obliging and the picture was taken. However, when I got inside I was diddling around with my digital camera and accidentally erased the picture. I compensated for the loss by taken over 90 pictures during the show.

Imagine being on a convertable jet, flying right through storm clouds during the world's loudest and most sustained thunderstorm. That is basically what the Obituary / Napalm Death show felt like. Napalm Death showed no signs of age as they plowed through an unbelievably ecclectic and brutal set featuring their old classics and a few newer tunes. Barney's stage presence is way more erratic and animated than in the old days. They were so loud that when their set was over I felt like I was going to puke. Their sound literally shook me where I stood. Obituary brought their signature, slower yet louder style to the stage and had the crowd going absolutely mental. John Tardy's shrill screams have only become more brutal over the years and his brother's drumming has done the same. The pit was pretty nuts, I saw a few fights, and a few people got hurt. Man, it was just like old times. I still can't believe BB Kings could handle an event like this.

REVIEW! MATISYAHU - WEBSTER HALL - 9/8/05

Last month, before this blog existed, I went to see Matisyahu at Webster Hall. I had never really heard too much about the man and I don't like reggae, but when my friend from Canada mentioned he was coming all the way to NYC to see the show and that he bought me a ticket, how could I NOT go? I was initially put off by the giddy, hippy bullshit crowd, but once he started playing the annoying crowd sort of disappeared from my conscience. The mixture of superbly polished up-tempo and down-tempo reggae mixed with his spiritually sound lyrics had my attention from the get go. Though I felt his set was a tad too long and the venue got a bit too hot, I definitely became a fan. Matisyahu bridges the very large gap between the stuffy, old-school Hasids and the younger, hipper-yet-extremely-traditional Hasids that represent the Hasids of the 21st century. ANYHOW, TO THE PICS!

REVIEW! NEW PORNOGRAPHERS - WEBSTER HALL - 10/13/05

Based on the recommendations of my brother, I went to Webster Hall and checked out The New Pornographers on Thursday. I don't recall ever seeing Webster Hall so packed so I decided to take advantage of my all access pass and watch the show from the VIP balcony and the backstage area. The VIP area included guests such as, oh, I don't know, EUGENE MIRMAN, TODD BARRY, ANDY BLITZ, and even DAVID CROSS' GIRLFRIEND. The show was absolutely amazing. Having never heard them, I immediately became a fan. Oh, and Neko Case isn't that hot. I don't know what all the hubbub is all about. She seems pretty average to me. ANYHOW, TO THE PICS!

REVIEW! DUNGEN - BOWERY BALLROOM - 10/15/05

I checked out Dungen last night at the Bowery Ballroom. It was the first of 2 Bowery shows. I have to say that their performance last night didn't feel as strong as their performance at Maxwell's. Maybe it was the difference in the size of the venue? Who knows. They still played an energetic and incredible show. Ironically, Endless Boogie sounded stronger than they did when I saw them open for Dungen at Maxwell's. Fancy that. ANYHOW, TO THE PICS!
