REVIEW! MY MORNING JACKET - WEBSTER HALL - 10/18/05

I am sick. Real sick. Sore throat, sinus pressure, nausea, dissiness, watery snot dripping from my nose, aching all over.... the works. I was invited to see My Morning Jacket last night at Webster Hall and even though I felt near death went to the show. I was given VIP pass and headed straight to the VIP seating area where I plopped my sick ass in a chair next to the railing and camped out there for the evening.

Much like the New Pornographers, I had never heard My Morning Jacket prior to seeing them. The show sold out so fast and there is such a buzz surrounding the band that I had high expectations. The opener, Kathleen Edwards, played soft, melodic, and very impressive tunes. Her rhythm section was absolutely tops and I found her lead guitarist to be one of the tastier guitarists I have seen in a while. They were great but her tunes were a bit mellow and made me drowsy and I began to fear that I'd be in for an entire evening of slow tunes.

My Morning Jacket came on and totally ripped the place up. Their tunes were anthemic and their energy was unparalleled. I sat on my little chair absolutely transfixed. The VIP area was totally swamped with frat boys and these really over-perfumed women and this negative element normally would have had an effect on the entire show, but MMJ was so powerful and so loud that the stage was the sole focus of my attention. I took some of my usual mediocre pics. Enjoy jerks!
